APAHA celebrates 15 years of service to the City of Houston and honors Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta for his major contribution to the celebration of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month!
In June 1977, Representatives Frank Horton of New York and Norman Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the President to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian/Pacific Heritage Week. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George H. W. Bush designated May to be Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in 1843.
The 15th Anniversary Gala will benefit APAHA's education and raise awareness initiatives, including the APAHA Endowment at the UH Asian American Studies Center, Rooted Voices: an Oral History of Our Culture & Heritage Project with area colleges, and the APAHA Organizational Mentorship Initiative with local Asia Clubs in HISD.

Woolford lives at the crossroads of time, place and cultural worlds. He looks to his past of joining a local youth gang, preying on sun-burnt tourists, becoming a local teen icon and devoting himself to the rigorous training in old style male dancing (hula kahiko) and compares it to the conflicts that real locals face growing up in a society whose values and traditions are dismissed by a dominant culture based so far from home. Plus, he explores the maleness and masculinity of the world of hula and the stereotypes that are portrayed through societys depictions of Hawaii Five-O, Elvis movies, and hotel hula shows that are typically associated to women. Ultimately, it is in all of this that Wolford asks Where do I land?
Directed by Robert Uno, I Land has a stellar collaborating cast. Legendary choreographers-Hula master and musician, Robert Cazimero, and New York hip hop dancer/ choreographer Ana Rokafella Garcia worked with Woolford during the creation of the work.
The NYTheatre.com says Keos work is stunning. Woolford is an extraordinary dancergraceful, limber, and deliberate in all of his remarkably detailed moves. He's glorious to watch. He's also a persuasive actor and writer ...the cumulative power of this work is undeniable, the LA Times states "it's an admirable, entertaining piece, and Woolford's range of movement and humor is something to see, and The Village Voice says Woolford's a powerful and seductive presence.

Starting with the raw materials and basic utilitarian art forms traditionally found in Asia, such as lacquer coffers, coffins and chests, Phi Phi Oanh has created a series of 16 oversized boxes whose proportions echo those of a burial casket. Rich paintings adorn the lids, combining sensual abstraction with precise figuration. Organic materials including the lacquer resin, stone pigments, and precious metals form the palette in which she has created her work.
PhiPhi Oanh has a BFA from the Parsons School of Design, Paris and New York (2002) and started a Masters class in Fresco Painting from the Fine Arts University of Madrid (2004.) She has exhibited her work exhibited in a number of international solo exhibitions including the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts; Parsons Gallery, Paris and the Palacio de la Cultura Nicaragua. Born in Houston, Texas, she has lived and worked in Hanoi, Vietnam since 2005. Before going to Hanoi, Phi Phi taught at La Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas Rodrigo Peñalba in Managua, Nicaragua.
In late 2004 Phi Phi received a Fulbright Student Grant to study the medium of Vietnamese lacquer painting. This study grant allowed her, the Houston-born daughter of exiled Vietnamese, to go to Vietnam for the first time. She has since been working in Hanoi.

For Immediate Release
Date: July 11, 2008
Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association joins forces with Nova Arts Project
HOUSTON, TX - Nova Arts Project, the Houston theatre company dedicated to recreating classics and inspiring new works in a fearlessly theatrical way, presents, in collaboration with the Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association the regional premier of The Gate of Heaven by Lane Nishikawa and Victor Talmadge at DiverseWorks Art Space.
The Gate of Heaven follows two men, a Japanese-American soldier and a Jewish survivor of the Dachau prison camp, through fifty years of shared experience and a shared journey to discover the elusive American dream.
Playwright Lane Nishikawa has been called "one of Asian Americas most compelling voices" by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Okazaki who noted, "His work is funny, angry, and deeply moving". Upon seeing one of Nishikawa's one-man shows, the Los Angeles Times theater critic Sylvie Drake declared that "his core is molten lead & Nishikawa is at his best when the language takes over and we're exposed to a tumbling profusion of culture images racing by." His acclaimed body of work over two decades has continually broken new ground in examining the human condition of the Asian American experience.
APAHA and Nova Arts Project are excited to join forces once again in the production of such an important artistic and cultural event. Previously, these two organizations worked together to stage the wildly successful Joy Luck Club as part of the NEA Big Read program and the Houston International Festival.
Nova Artistic Director Clinton Hopper said, I'm humbled and thrilled to work with APAHA again. The opportunity to create a piece of theater that speaks to several sectors of our society, particularly ones that do not have many opportunities to interact is extremely gratifying. And to do so in the setting of the DiverseWorks Art Space makes the entire project that much more wonderful."
The Gate of Heaven opens Saturday, December 6 and plays again Sunday, December 7; then again the next weekend, Thursday, December 11 through Sunday, December 14; and finally, Thursday, December 18 through Sunday, December 21. All Sunday performances, December 7, 14 and 21 are 2pm matinees, and all other performances are at 8pm at the DiverseWorks Art Space, 1117 E. Freeway, Houston, TX 77002. Tickets are on a sliding scale between $15-$30 and can be purchased in advance online at www.novaartsproject.com or at the door. Reservations can be made by calling the Nova Arts Project office at 713-623-4033 or emailing: info@novaartsproject.com.
APAHA is a 501(c)3 organization. APAHA/s main objectives include enhancing racial harmony in our city, promoting cross-cultural awareness, education and appreciation between and among Asian/Pacific Americans and other ethnic groups by outreaching to schools, businesses, and other institutions. Visit APAHA at www.apaha.org.
Nova Arts Project is a Houston-based, not-for-profit performing arts organization that seeks to recreate classics and inspire new works in a fearlessly theatrical way. For more information about Nova Arts Project, please visit www.novaartsproject.com.
This project is made possible by the Coexistence Grant through the Houston Arts Alliance, as well as generous support from Cole Chemical, APAHA, and DiverseWorks Art Space.

Japanese American Resettlement Through the Lens
Foreword by the Honorable Norman Y. Mineta
"They are striking images of proud people who faced their government imposed adversity with dignity and even humor. They are photographs for the ages." -Sandra Dallas,
The Denver Post
In Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens, Lane Ryo Hirabayashi gathers a unique collection of photographs by War Relocation Authority photographer Hikaru Iwasaki, the only full-time WRA photographer from the period still living.
This book is the first sustained treatment addressing questions directly related to official WRA photographs. How and under what conditions were they taken? Where were they developed, selected, and stored? How were they used during the 1940s? What impact did they have during and following the war?
A book you will cherish through the years. Get your copy today!
Book- $34.95
Pre-order price $26.00 until September 23rd

This event will be held on Friday, March 16, 2012, 6-9 p.m., at the Kim Son Restaurant, Highway 59 at the Fountains, Stafford, Texas. Join us for dinner, an educational presentation on new data, and a lively discussion with Dr. Klineberg.
Tickets are $25 per person. $15 for APAHA Members. $500 for event sponsorship (includes a special seating for 10 people at a VIP table, promotion of organization at the event and marketing materials).
