A Night of Heritage and Heart: A Recap of the APAHA Gala

The Asian Pacific American Heritage Association (APAHA) recently hosted a spectacular gala that celebrated community, culture, and the next generation of leaders. The evening was a resounding success, serving as a powerful reminder of the impact of collective effort and shared heritage.

Honoring Excellence and Investing in the Future

One of the most significant highlights of the evening was the investment in the future of the community. APAHA was proud to award $1,000 scholarships to 10 deserving high school seniors, supporting their journey toward higher education.

In addition to celebrating students, the gala recognized outstanding individuals and businesses for their contributions:

  • Community Service Award: David Hsu

  • George H.W. Bush Award: Judge Juli Mathew

  • Corporate Award: Lena Le of Lena’s Asian Kitchen

A Spectacular "Dancing with the Stars" Segment

The energy in the room reached a fever pitch during the Dancing with the Stars competition. The coveted Mirror Ball Trophy was awarded to the Honorable Theresa Chang, who captivated the audience with a performance truly fit for a queen.

The segment also featured a powerful performance by Alice Lee, whose grit and professional-level skill were on full display. Notably, the competition was a platform for progress, as Alice Lee was commended for promoting gender-neutral dance. By emphasizing that anyone can dance with anyone in any role, the performance highlighted that the ultimate goal of dance is joy, exercise, and artistic expression.

Other thrilling celebrity dancers featured Dr. Daryl Dichoso, Brian Lee, and Julia Wang who performed for us.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the outstanding panel of judges who faced the challenging task of evaluating the talent: Dr. Jacquie Baly, Mahesh Ishwar Mahbubani, and last year’s winner, Lukkaew Srasrisuwan.

Colors of Asia: A Runway Tribute to Mothers

The gala also introduced the Colors of Asia Runway Fashion Show, which served as a beautiful tribute to mothers. Models Yong Tran, Nevin Noorani, Yalni Rodgers, Saki Indakwa, Jaewon Jung, Pele Bennett, Nahid Panjwani, Lukkaew Srasrisuwan, Rose-Ann Aragon, and Tram Luu graced the stage, showcasing stunning designs. In a touching gesture of appreciation, all mothers in attendance received a red rose upon check-in.

Gratitude to the Team and Partners

The seamless flow of the evening was expertly managed by emcees Ross-Ann Arogon and Jonas Chin, who kept the audience engaged and inspired.

An event of this magnitude is only possible through the tireless work of the APAHA Board of Directors and staff. Special recognition goes to Executive Director Sofia Sheikh, as well as board members Jacqueline Leong, Luis M. Chen, Barbara Joe, Betty Gee, Saki Indakwa, Jim Travlos, Cathy Podell, Penina Partsch, Lisa Cheng, Sharan Guhinia, and John Chen.

The stunning atmosphere of the room was crafted by Ayesha and Masood from SAMA Events, while guests enjoyed the refreshing flavors of Linda’s Tropical Fruits, a local Houston favorite known for its exotic smoothies and signature "Incredibowls."

Looking Ahead

While the gala was an exhausting undertaking, the results were well worth the effort. APAHA extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who attended, donated, and participated. Together, we continue to celebrate our heritage and strengthen our community.
